‘He’s Our Quarterback!’ Dallas Cowboys Plan To Sign Dak Prescott With New Timetable
The Dallas Cowboys are attempting to determine the possibility that quarterback Dak Prescott will have a contract extension after his current contract is up in 2024. Although the extension is not set in stone, there seems to be a new timetable. If Prescott’s contract gets extended, he will receive $59.455 million against the cap next season.
“He’s under contract now, but we’d like to do this after the season,” said Cowboys COO Stephen Jones. “Once the season is over, we will focus on that. Dak will be our quarterback.” There are a couple of reasons why it hasn’t been officially announced whether or not Prescott will receive an extension. One main reason is that it may affect how well the team plays together for the remainder of the season.
Another reason is because owners Jerry and Stephen Jones are waiting to see how Prescott performs on the field through the rest of this year. It would make more financial sense to wait to announce the extension in case there is debate about the player’s worth. When Jerry Jones was asked whether the new deal was about Prescott’s talent or paying him to keep the cap manageable, he claimed that both were reasons for the deal.

In a 20-17 win against the Chargers last week, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had the ability to create incredible plays on the field that led his team to victory. On every play that took two-and-a-half seconds or longer, Prescott earned the best Pro Football Focus grade of all quarterbacks to have at least 15 dropbacks. His ability to move around the field quickly and execute quick and effective plays led him to a 90.0 grade.
These impressive plays were put in motion with two big-time throws that got him 172 yards on 27 dropbacks. This season, Prescott has totaled 1,332 passing yards with six passing touchdowns and four interceptions on 190 attempts. As the Cowboys move forward with their 4-2 record, they will next
battle against the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 29 in Dallas and look to hold their No. 2 ranking in the NFC East.
After the 2024 NFL season, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is eligible to be a free agent.
If the Cowboys do decide to let Prescott go, then they could save $34 million in salary cap space. If they keep Prescott, he will receive a roster bonus in March that will get added to the $29 million base salary he has for 2024.
Although keeping Prescott takes a lot of the team’s salary, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has expressed that he plans to keep Prescott.
The Dallas Cowboys sit at a 4-2 record coming out of their bye week. While their two losses were hard pills to swallow, four wins in six games is impressive nonetheless. The Cowboys head into the easier four-game stretch of their remaining schedule, potentially putting themselves in a great position heading into their Thanksgiving game against the Washington Commanders.
Until fans see the contract in Prescott’s hands, there will still be suspicion about the two-time Pro Bowler’s future. The Cowboys may have to reevaluate whether they have their money in order or not to ensure successful seasons in the future.
