Ryan Lowe drops early Preston North End selection hint for Southampton clash
Ryan Lowe has admitted he will consider freshening his side up for Preston North End’s clash with Southampton on Wednesday night.
The Lilywhites have been afforded an extra days rest from their 1-1 draw with Millwall last weekend. North End have a double game week with a trip to Hull City on Saturday and the short turnaround between games could impact Lowe’s thinking when naming his next team.
Jordan Storey, Ben Whiteman and Duane Holmes all came back into the starting XI against Millwall, with Milutin Osmajic and Alan Browne dropping to the bench whilst Jack Whatmough was ruled out through injury. All five of the permitted substitutes were used and despite not finding that all important second goal, the likes of Browne, Osmajic and Liam Millar could be in for starts against Russell Martin’s side.
“There are always things to build on,” said Lowe. “We have to move on quickly now, keep learning, doing the right things – never get too high and never get too low. You’ve got those players who came on to the pitch today and of course, rotation is going to be on your mind. You are coming up against another good team in Southampton. We are at home and we want to make sure we put the game plan together. Hopefully the lads go and take it to fruition.”

Preston North End halted a run of three-straight defeats with a 1-1 draw vs Millwall last time out, with Ryan Lowe’s side remaining in 4th place of the Championship table.
Southampton meanwhile have moved up into 5th and just a point behind the Lilywhites. Russell Martin’s Saints are now unbeaten in four and have won three of those, winning 2-1 away at Hull City last time out.
The man on loan from West Ham dominated the last outing vs Hull City. He’s proving to be pivotal in this passing, possession-based style of play that Martin is implementing at Southampton, and Downes is also a player who can throw in tackles and break down opposition attacks.
Whiteman is an engine in the middle of the park for Preston. He’s recently made his return from injury and has recently come back into the starting side after a long time out, playing the full 90 vs Millwall last time out.
Whether or not Lowe gives him start tomorrow night remains to be seen, given the quick turnaround in games, but if Whiteman starts then he’ll certainly be one who could dictate tomorrow’s fixture.
Despite scoring seven in the Championship already this season, Martin says that Armstrong feels like he’s yet to really get going. But given his pedigree at Championship level, he could burst into life at any moment.
Preston’s summer signing has scored in the last two outings for the Lilywhites now, having scored three and assisted two in 11 Championship appearances so far this season.
He’s a very technically-gifted player and he’ll look to get in between Southampton’s midfield and defensive lines tomorrow, and cause the Saints some problems.
Adams has been rotated by Martin this season. The Scot was used as a substitute vs Hull City last weekend following the international break, but he could come into the XI tomorrow and give someone else a rest.
And if he starts then he’ll no doubt be a worry for Preston; Adams has Premier League pedigree and he’ll want to end a run of more than two months without a goal sooner rather than late
