Lewis Cine, a rookie for the Minnesota Vikings, will undergo surgery for a fractured leg.
Coach Kevin O’Connell said that rookie safety Lewis Cine of the Minnesota Vikings would have surgery in London to fix a fractured left leg he sustained during Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.
Until medical professionals deem it safe for him to return to Minnesota, Cine will stay in the United Kingdom.
When revealing the specifics of Cine’s injury, which happened with 1:08 left in the first quarter of the Vikings’ 28-25 victory, O’Connell fought back tears. Cine’s leg bowed abnormally on the artificial turf playing surface at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which is converted from grass for NFL games, while he was blocking on a punt return.
Cine was brought off the field on a cart and promptly fitted with an air cast.
“Very trying time for our group,” O’Connell remarked. “[Cine] is plainly a guy who has been a personal favorite of mine from Day 1 and complies with all requirements. In his debut season, he kept getting better and played a tremendously important part for us on special teams.”
