For UM, Good News Arrives in Triples

Although the University of Miami hasn’t had all positive news lately, the Canes can scarcely claim credit for the much-needed win-win-win on January 10.

Mario Cristobal, a former player and assistant coach, was rehired as the assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator, and tight ends coach to start the day. (There hasn’t been an official confirmation yet, but former defensive lineman Kareem Brown is reportedly rumored to be returning as a graduate assistant.)

After Miami basketball’s 68-59 victory over North Carolina in Chapel Hill this evening, Rob Chudzinski, a former Canes tight end and offensive coordinator, was appointed as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns an hour later.

The NCAA’s NoA and, ideally, three reductions in scholarships—one every year—come next.

Well, one can hope.

The head coach of the Miami Hurricanes basketball team is a major factor in the team’s first-ever trip to the Final Four.

The Miami Hurricanes are on their way to the Final Four for the first time in school history.

For good reason, the Hurricanes have been regarded as a football-first university for a very long time. The Canes, led by Jimmy Johnson, dominated college football in the 1980s. This dynasty persisted to some extent until the team won the national championship again in the early 2000s.

Through a pigskin lens, the entirety of the Hurricanes identity—good, awful, and everything in between—has been perceived.

Along with colleagues Isaiah Wong, Jordan Miller, and others, Norchad Omier is the face of the Canes’ success, but one man in particular deserves roses for once again elevating a program to previously unheard-of heights.

Who is the basketball coach for the Miami Hurricanes?

It’s hard to ignore the similarities between the basketball team’s performance and the Hurricanes’ football team. The head coach was leading the charge, which contributed to the legendary status of the football teams. While Johnson is the most well-known, there are other notable figures in the history as well, including Dennis Erickson, Butch Davis, Larry Cocker, and the legendary Howard Schnellenberger.

When they were in charge of things, those people were the program’s identity more than anything else, and the same is true of the basketball program today.

As the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes basketball team, Jim Larrañaga is likely to stay in that position for a very long time.

But this isn’t his first time attending the Final Four. When Larrañaga led George Mason to the Final Four as a No. 11 seed in 2006, he became an elite player. The season ended in disappointment as the Patriots lost to the legendary Florida Gators in the Final Four, but Larrañaga’s trip took him to Miami and back to the place where everything started for him and George

“You know, last year we made it to the Elite Eight, and then it ended miserably,” Larrañaga told Tracy Wolfson after the game.
“So today everyone kept talking about how we need to get past the Elite Eight and get to the Final Four.
[Omier] was telling everyone how it went last year… they were all saying it.
Now the team departs for Houston, where the season continues longer than ever for the Hard Hurricanes and where the school is two wins away from becoming national champions.
