Michigan Wolverines Land Commitment From 4-Star Quarterback In 2025 Class

All the noise around the Michigan Wolverines football program has apparently not stopped the recruiting train. Four-star quarterback Carter Smith of the 2025 class announced today that he was committing to Michigan.

Smith is a 6′ 3″, 180-pound quarterback out of Fort Meyers Florida. According to 247, he is the 14th-ranked quarterback in the class. Jim Harbaugh and his team were able to beat out the big programs from the state of Florida for the commitment. Both Florida State and Florida were in the mix but Smith ultimately chose to come to Ann Arbor. Smith is considered a bit of a project as his throwing mechanics need some work. However, his athletic ability is off the charts, and he is a great get for the program.

Smith is one of three recruits who have committed to the Wolverines. Four-star cornerback Chris Ewald and three-star defensive lineman Bobby Kanka are the other two that have committed. It gives the Wolverines the 12th ranked class in the nation currently though it is extremely early. What is more impressive is that the program is able to get commitments despite being under investigation by the NCAA for sign-stealing. There is still time for recruits to change their mind but this may signal that recruits are not worried.

Recruiting hasn’t been a huge topic of conversation with everything going on with Michigan football lately, however, Sunday brought some good news for the Michigan Wolverines on a couple of different fronts.

Michigan basketball was trending as the favorite to land five-star forward Khani Rooths in the 2024 class and on Sunday, Rooths made it official. He will sign and join Christian Anderson and Durral Brooks.

Rooths is a 6-foot-8 200-pound forward who could play the three or the four for the Wolverines. He’s a solid shooter and he can attack the basket going downhill. Rooths is going to fit really well with the current core group that will be back in season — as Dug McDaniel, Tarris Reed, and Nimari Burnett are all starters with multiple years to play.

Here is the scouting report on Rooths from Dylan Burkhardt of UMHooops, who gives us a good idea of what Michigan basketball fans can expect.

“Rooths is a prototypical modern forward with a versatile game that hinges on his length and athleticism. He has great length and can play multiple spots on the floor, attacking mismatches against bigger or smaller players, and defending a range of archetypes. His jumper looks good, and he will stretch the floor out to 3-point range, but he’s most comfortable dribbling into pull-ups around the elbows right now. He has a nice face-up game from the mid-post, and can also post up against smaller players.”

Rooths is ranked 25th overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s the perfect addition to the 2024 class, which had two other commitments ranked just outside the top 100 and he’s the first major recruiting addition since Jett Howard.

Yet, Wiltfong reports that Michigan football wants to take two quarterbacks in the 2025 class, so if they do take the commitment of Carter, it doesn’t mean they are bowing out of the Underwood commitment.

Smith is a solid prospect in his own right and is ranked as a top-10 quarterback by three of the four scouting services. Just something for Michigan football fans to keep in mind.
