AL DIAZ adiaz@miamiherald.com University of Miami quarterback Emory Williams, who was admitted to a Tallahassee hospital Saturday night after being suffered a serious left arm injury late in the Hurricanes’ loss to No.
4 Florida State.
, returned with the team to Miami, UM announced Sunday morning in a press release.
“Miami quarterback Emory Williams injured his left arm in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game and was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital,” the release said.
“He was back with the team on Saturday night.
“We will update his status as more information becomes available.
” Williams, a right-handed freshman, did not have surgery before leaving Tallahassee, but CaneSport reported Sunday through a source that he suffered a compound fracture and will require surgery.
underwent surgery on Monday.
Williams was injured on fourth-and-2 at UM 20 with 2:.
56 remaining.
He lunged toward the first shot and extended his arms as he hit the ground hard, his right arm gripping the ball and his left arm taking the brunt of the impact.
The midfielder was immediately surrounded by coaches, players and medical staff when a paramedic rushed onto the field and placed his arm in a thick, black protective device.
somehow.
Williams cried as he was taken into the tunnel at Doak Campbell Stadium, loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.
Miami Hurricanes quarterback Emory Williams (17) is sacked by Florida State quarterback Kalen DeLoach (4) during the first half at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, on Saturday, November 11, 2023.
Al Diaz adiaz@miamiherald.com UM coach Mario Cristobal said immediately after the game that it was a “serious injury” but did not elaborate.
Williams finished 8-of-23 (34.
7%) for 175 yards and two touchdowns against Jacolby George in UM’s 27-20 loss.
He was fired twice.
Saturday was Williams’ fifth start this season, meaning he won’t be able to reach redshirt status next season as he’s a sophomore.
” Brave.
Tough,” UM coach Mario Cristobal said of Williams’ performance.
“At first I was a little nervous, then I settled down.
I also made some big throws, ran bravely, especially in the game where he got hurt.
But he also struggled when he scored the first goal [and] we finished the game.
[He] continues to thrive.
Overall, I know statistically it wasn’t really [great], but he made a spectacular throw to Jacolby and made some other key throws.
There were others he wanted to find.
One, [when his pass hit] the referee, right in the middle.
Fourth-year senior Tyler Van Dyke, UM’s veteran starting quarterback who was replaced Saturday by starter Williams, replaced the injured Williams and led the Canes to two first downs but was stopped with less than a minute left to seal the win for FSU.
Van Dyke’s recent struggles on the field along with injuries to his right knee, ribs and back have led to Williams being promoted.
It will likely be a battle between Van Dyke and sophomore Jacurri Brown to start at least the final two regular-season games.
Brown, who played in five games last year and started two of them, hasn’t played this season.
He will retain his redshirt status this year regardless of how much he plays to conclude the season.
“He’s doing well,” Cristobal said of Brown, who in the past has struggled with his accuracy.
“I would say he was even on the docket to play regardless of the situation.
We felt it was the best decision for our team to establish Emory.
And if Emory gets injured, Tyler is [next], because Tyler had a really good week of practice.
representing UM’s three sacks (a loss of 39 yards).
Cristobal paid special attention to George, who had a career-high 153 receiving yards – 131 after the catch – and two touchdowns on five receptions.
“Jacolby George made a big play, man,” the coach said.
“He shows that he is elusive and can make people miss him.
Apparently, this car got stuck in traffic and ended up going a long way, which required a lot of concentration.
I have to keep finding ways to get him the ball.
CRISTOBAL’S APPROACH Cristobal was asked if the game showed significant growth from last year, when FSU beat the Hurricanes 45-3.
Of course it is,” Cristobal said.
“Let’s call it whatever it is.
No one wants to rewrite the story of how the show ended, right?
But I knew the state of the program when I arrived and I knew everything that so many people had worked to overcome and improve it.
Yes, the gap is closing.
Everyone is getting better.
There’s been a lot of development, a lot of improvements.
And I appreciate the question – I don’t want to sound angry – we came here to win.
“We didn’t come here to receive consolation prizes.
” “The gap has narrowed.
Lots of improvements.
There are certainly a lot of developments.
This will definitely motivate you and we must continue… Our people there understood that as we became more and more intertwined, it would be difficult to stop us.
Encouraged, motivated, improved a lot, improved more, more people improved, developed players, recruited, attracted talent, but in the second year there was no doubt.
Significant progress.
” The Hurricanes (6-4, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) will return to Hard Rock Stadium for their next game against No.
9 Louisville (9-1, 6-1) at noon Saturday in UM’s home finale.
Miami then ends the regular season the day after Thanksgiving at Boston College.
This game is also scheduled for noon.
