Broncos’ $1 million shortfall is a headache as extensions of young talent cast doubt on veteran’s future Broncos vice-captain Kurt Capewell says the Red Hill club has salary cap issues.
As a result, he is reportedly involved in a selection battle that could decide his future.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the Broncos are close to re-signing Brendan Piacula to a three-year, $1 million contract extension.
Capewell is currently a free agent and his current contract expires at the end of the 2024 season.
There’s no guarantee it will be extended when the Broncos return to preseason.

The young backrower had a fantastic season in 2023, making 23 appearances and being a key figure in Brisbane’s run to the finals.
Capewell, on the other hand, will turn 31 next year and is confident he can remain on the field until the end of 2026, despite suffering from pain last season.
Rival clubs are reportedly preparing offers for Piacula, but a contract announcement with the Broncos is reportedly imminent.
Given that the Broncos are negotiating new contracts with Riki and Piacula, Capewell could be pushed out of the back row.
However, the experienced striker faces a big change in 2024 to prove his mettle again and earn a new contract.
