Liam Cullen: Swansea City’s head coach is looking for “no excuse” for his players’ poor play.
Swansea City’s players, according to Liam Cullen, won’t use the team’s hunt for a new head coach as a “excuse”.
The 24-year-old striker for Wales, whose free kick on Friday resulted in a 2-2 draw against Coventry, believes that teamwork will see them through this uncertain time.
On Monday, the Swans will play host to West Bromwich Albion, a team that is vying for promotion, under the direction of interim head coach Alan Sheehan.
“Obviously the situation at the club is what it is,” stated Cullen.
“I think it would be easy for us to use it as an excuse. We don’t, because we know the quality we have in the dressing room and performances have shown that, whether it was this season or last.
“
Even if we have made a few additions, the group has remained mostly unchanged, so we are aware that we possess that quality and that our current situation is inadequate; we discuss these issues on a daily basis.
“We must return to our strongest strengths, which include controlling the ball, winning games, and defeating opponents in this league.
“We have shown that we are capable of doing so, and we believe that today’s 2-2 draw at Coventry is a positive start. We intend to maintain some momentum into 2024.”
Perfectionism is achieved with practice.
In his six games in charge, Sheehan has won two and drew two. Expectedly, he will be back in the dugout as the team searches for a new manager to replace Michael Duff, who was fired on December 4.
Chris Davies of Tottenham Hotspur was the team’s primary target, but the Swans were unable to sign him.
Cullen closed 2023 on a high note with his third goal of the year, a free kick in injury time that gave the Swans a point to recover from their 5-0 drubbing at Southampton, which was overseen by former Swansea manager Russell Martin, on Boxing Day.
The striker, who won his first cap for his country in November during Wales’ 4-0 victory over Gibraltar, said that practice made perfect.
“I work on my free-kicks every day after my independent training. Shaun Baggridge, the kit man, and I have been together from the under-23s all the way up to the first team for a very long time, so I try to walk down an end that’s free with mannequins,” Cullen remarked.
It was good to benefit from my practice and help the team win a point against a very formidable opponent because we have always done it together.
“I thought Coventry were really good and their place in the table (12th, with Swansea in 17th) doesn’t really reflect how they are as a team, so delighted with a point in the end.”
Born into the Pembrokeshire community of Kilgetty, Cullenm attended the Swans academy and thinks the team’s solidarity is reflected in the players’ character as demonstrated by the team’s comeback draw.
“I think that says volumes for the changing room,” he remarked. “We have always been a cohesive group, excellent friends off the field, and we do a lot of things together off the field and outside of football.
“I think that helps on the pitch because the lads are always doing something, whether it’s in small groups or as a large team.
“Swansea is undoubtedly a special place since it is so remote from all of the places we call home. which eventually benefits us.”
Swansea, now ranked 17th in the Championship, will try to end a turbulent period of time by defeating fifth-place West Brom on Monday and start 2024 on a positive note.
In August, the Baggies defeated the Swans 3-2 at the Hawthorns, despite a late comeback led by Harry Darling and Nathan Wood for the Swans.
Cullen expressed his disappointment, saying, “We gave up some unlucky and foolish goals up there.” Evidently, one struck Carl Rushworth in the head, and we also conceded a penalty.
“We put up two goals away from home, and after we conceded a third, we truly demonstrated our character.
“Hopefully, on New Year’s Day, we can get started right away and kick the
