Newcastle defeated a significantly altered Fulham team 2-0 to advance to the FA Cup quarterfinals. Goals from Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn sealed the victory.

The visitors’ overall quality proved to be the difference in this cup tie as the Magpies fielded their strongest team available, while Fulham made seven changes from their starting lineup. However, their opening goal was mired in dispute.

Six minutes before the break, Newcastle missed a corner that Sean Longstaff stroked home from the edge of the area, but Fulham wanted the goal disallowed because Bruno Guimaraes touched the ball with his arm to assist the score. Since Guimaraes was not the goal scorer, VAR did not rule it out.

Following the break, Fulham attempted to tie the score, but Newcastle increased their lead when Dan Burn scored from close range after Marek Rodak had saved Sven Botman’s header from a corner.

Newcastle will so enter the hat for the fifth round draw on Sunday afternoon in an attempt to snap a 69-year drought without winning a major prize this year. Fulham, on the other hand, lost to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semifinal midweek, and as a result, they were eliminated from two cup competitions in three days.

“We played better and were the more dominant team overall. Although I genuinely think we should have won the game, at this level, you will pay a price at the conclusion of the game for giving up careless goals.”

“It was a challenging game, not our best performance, but mentally, you win these games.” Resilience and drive had to be present, and they were. In terms of technical delivery, the second half was far better. Thank you for the perfect record and the two well-earned goals.

“Sean’s finish off his left foot is excellent. Dan—I doubt even he could have missed that one! However, he has scored some crucial goals for us, and we really needed that second goal.

“Everyone associated with Newcastle became more eager to visit Wembley after the Carabao Cup.” With any luck, we can win this competition.”

We talked about wanting to perform for [the supporters].

“We’re still waiting for bodies to return, and I don’t think we’re operating at full capacity. But you got a peek of what we’re capable of. We played some excellent stuff in the second half that we had practiced all week.

“Getting a goal makes me joyful. All I’m glad about is that I hit the mark!

“This club hasn’t won anything in such a long time. Hopefully, we can move forward and see who we get in the next round.”

Throughout the first hour of play in this encounter, a much-changed Fulham dominated, making that look far from assured at times.

However, they advanced to the round of 16 thanks to goals from Longstaff in the first half (after the ball slipped through Guimaraes’ arm) and Burn in the 61st minute from close range.

Following that second goal, Fulham’s chances of winning were severely diminished.
