Owner of the Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones stated on Tuesday that he thinks he and former head coach Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots “could work together.”
Jones told Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein, “I know him personally and I like him,” during the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. “I have no doubt that we could collaborate. Not one. Not one.”
Jones asked what he admired most about Belichick, and this was his response. When asked in Mobile if he had spoken with Belichick this month, Jones replied that he hadn’t, and if he believed the eight-time Super Bowl champion will have another opportunity to coach, Jones answered, “I don’t know. I’d avoid speculating.
Following 24 years that included six Super Bowl victories and nine AFC Championships, Belichick and the Pats parted ways. In his prior role as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, Belichick also won two Lombardi Trophies.
The Dallas Cowboys are coached by Mike McCarthy, who has guided the group to three consecutive seasons with twelve wins.
Dallas, the No. 2 seed, had failed to make the playoffs before, and this year they lost to the Green Bay Packers 48-32 in the NFC Wild Card Round.
This sparked rumors about McCarthy’s employment, and when Belichick lost his position, many associated him with Dallas. Though McCarthy is in the latter year of a five-season contract, Jones has decided to keep him.
Regarding Belichick, it doesn’t seem like he will be coaching in 2024. There are now just two head coach positions available, in Seattle and Washington, neither of which has had communication with the former Patriot.
But according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, he’s reportedly interested in going back to the sidelines—”on his terms.”
