KSWO – MEDICINE PARK, Oklahoma Although February 2 is Groundhog Day, it was Prairie Dog Day at the Medicine Park Aquarium!
To give the celebration a touch of southwest Oklahoma, Poppy the Prairie Dog made a special appearance today.
Poppy has been a well-liked fixture at the aquarium, and administrators hired her to forecast the local weather.
“They have the well-known Punxsutawney Phil, and since the black-tail prairie dog is a native animal here and can be seen in the wildlife refuge, we want to have our own version with our local animals,” stated Rainette Rowland, Executive Director of Medicine Park Aquarium. “Poppy has been with us for almost six years, and she made her debut predicting the weather five years ago.”
Nelson stated, “You know our water plant is aging and decaying because it was built in the early 1970s.” “We have underground pipes that date back more than a century.” I am aware that the city has a $50 million plan in place to renovate and upgrade the infrastructure of the water plant.
But the two contenders are not just concentrating on that issue.
“We are fortunate to have affordable and desirable housing in addition to aging infrastructure,” Nelson remarked. “I am aware that the city has begun work on a few of those upgrades, and I am also aware of one development on Veterans Road that should be operational shortly.”
We do have a lot of ongoing initiatives, so perhaps we ought to wrap up a few before taking on new ones, Clement remarked. Everyone has long been concerned about utility costs, and the treatment facility is now treating our water issues. We fear that we won’t have enough water to last the entire year because of the droughts.
The election for the Ward 4 seat will begin on Tuesday, February 13.
