The NRL champions have been dealt a setback as they prepare to take on the Warriors.

Penrith Panthers head coach Ivan Cleary has confirmed that star player Jarome Luai would not play for the team in their World team Challenge match against Wigan Warriors. Cleary stated that the stand-off will travel but will be unable to play at the DW Stadium after returning to training following surgery for a dislocated shoulder.

Luai, a Samoan international, has helped the Panthers win three NRL Grand Finals in a row. The Greater Sydney-based team has yet to win the World team Challenge, missing out on the event in 2022 due to COVID-19 limitations and finished second following a shock defeat at home to St Helens last year.

Last season, the Saints gained an early lead with tries from Jack Welsby and Konrad Hurrell, but the Panthers rallied to tie the game at 12-12 by the conclusion of normal time. However, a drop goal by halfback Lewis Dodd during golden point secured a 13-12 victory for the Saints and a massive shock for the NRL club in front of their home crowd.

This time around, Cleary’s team will have to win without the playmaking abilities of their 27-year-old star stand-off Luai.

The 52-year-old head coach stated: “He will not participate in the World Club Challenge because he is not yet ready.

The match will be played on February 24 in front of a sold-out crowd at the DW Stadium.
