Mansfield Town’s new lad Tom Nicols is happy to get his first goal out his full debut.

Tom Nicols, a new signing for Mansfield Town, scored his first goal for the club on his full debut against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

Striker Nicols, who joined on an 18-month contract from Gillingham on January Window deadline day, said: “It was wonderful to have a goal early in my time here. It was also a really excellent 4-0 victory, so it’s a solid start.

“It came at a good point in the game, as Forest Green began to put people forward and get a footing in the game.

“From then, we really took off. It almost broke their hearts, but we scored two more and won comfortably in the end.

Fellow striker Will Swan created the goal, and Nicols said: “I was pleased with it – it was an instinctive one really.”

“Swanny did a great job down the side and cut it back to me, and I had a terrific first touch to put it in the corner.

“It’s a good feeling to score your first goal for a club and good to get it out of the way.”

Nicols stated that his motivation for joining Mansfield was straightforward.

“I just want to get promoted – that is my number one goal for me and everyone else and I am going to do everything I can to help,” he told reporters.

“I’m here to score as many goals as possible and help this team advance, so it’s a nice start.

“We have a good crew here. We have a number of pretty talented players. I had fun playing with Swanny and Davo (Davis Kiellor-Dunn).

“Swanny scored and set up a goal, while Lucas (Akins) came on and set up two goals. Davo won us the game last week, so it’s been a terrific few weeks for the front players.”

He continued, “It’s been very nice. They’re a wonderfully nice group of guys and a well settled team.

“I already know some players here, which helps. I’ve settled in fairly nicely.

“It helps that the side is performing well, of course, and I’m here to supplement what they already have.

“They have performed admirably this season and are now leading the standings. Hopefully, I can contribute to it and enhance us.

It will bring out the best in me to play alongside all of these talented players in a strong system.”

On new manager Nigel Clough, he said: “He is clearly a tremendously talented manager, and my game fits the way this club plays. So he hasn’t had to instruct me to do a lot.

“The team fits me, and I believe I fit the squad. It’s been a nice transition.

“He offers you a lot of flexibility to go out and play as long as you work hard, which I always do.

“And with the side creating so many chances, it allows me to stay higher up the pitch and stay in the box and be on the end of those chances rather than trying to be the one to maybe create them as much.”
