Top and Bottom Possible Offseason Situations for the Steelers and NFL Teams with the Worst QB Issues
In the NFL, teams may be classified as either having a franchise quarterback or not. It is no accident that the two clubs who participated in Super Bowl LVIII both had one. It’s also not the case that the winning team has the better one.
From the outside, it doesn’t seem like the Pittsburgh Steelers have a franchise quarterback. The authorities in Steel City, however, might not agree. It is said that Pittsburgh is happy to start 2024 with either Mason Rudolph or Kenny Pickett at quarterback—so long as they can sign the latter player again. Pittsburgh has allegedly been connected to a number of experienced quarterbacks.
It raises an inquiry. What’s the best thing that can happen to teams like the Steelers that want to get better at the most crucial position in football? And what could possibly go wrong for them? An experienced newcomer? losing out on a highly valued rookie. a tiny bit of both?
Despite having the 25th-ranked passing offense in the league, the Pittsburgh Steelers were still able to win ten games and qualify for the postseason in 2023. An upgrade is required at quarterback if the Steelers are to advance and emerge as a serious contender in 2024.
BEST CASE: Justin Fields trade
The Steelers have a squad worthy of the playoffs, as we witnessed last season. T.J. Watt, who is perhaps the finest defensive player in the NFL, is in charge of the defense. The attacking skill positions are brimming with ability. The Steelers merely need to improve at quarterback. They aren’t that far away.
It is thought that Justin Fields would cost a Day 2 choice to any bidder, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Fields may thrive with the correct team surrounding him, one AFC executive told Fowler, even if he doesn’t necessarily view Fields as an elite option behind center.
“If you have to throw the ball 35 times a game with Fields, then you might run into challenges,” the executive stated. However, that does not preclude you from succeeding with him or prevent him from winning at tossing the ball. All he needs is the correct offense and network of support.”
It seems like the Steelers have exactly that kind of network of support.
WORST CASE: Remaining loyal to Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett
Sadly, it seems that Fields—or any other outside veteran—is not on the Steelers’ radar.
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes that the Steelers don’t want to pursue a high-end replacement since they have enough faith in Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph.
“I can’t imagine Fields wanting to sign with a team where he won’t be the No. 1 QB,” Dulac stated. “And I don’t believe the Steelers are in the market for a No. 1 QB.”
Omar Khan, the general manager of the Steelers, doesn’t seem to have really watched Pickett and Rudolph play.
