NFF will teach Nigerian referees on VAR following an 18-year break from international competitions.
The recent exclusion of Nigerian referees from the recently finished African Cup of Nations hosted in Ivory Coast has been discussed by MSports Board Member of the Nigeria Football Federation for the South-South zone, Honourable Nse Udofot Essien, according to Soccernet.ng.
It has been eighteen years since a Nigerian referee officiated at a tournament, much alone a worldwide one, when they last worked as the centre referee in a Nations Cup match in 2006.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Head of Refereeing, Desire Noumandiez Doue, stated in an interview with Soccernet.ng that performance issues prevented Nigerian referees from being chosen for the 2023 African Cup of Nations squad.

Udofot said, “The President has promised that our referees will be trained on it when it comes to VAR and advanced technology.” To make sure that our guys follow international best practices on par with their peers, constant consultations are taking place with CAF and FIFA.
Nigerian referees are looking forward to the next AFCON competition in 2025 and aim to show off their skills and silence their detractors.
