49ers comments, tidbits, and more after their victory against the Steelers on Sunday
Recall the preseason worries about run defence?
After the San Francisco 49ers limited the Pittsburgh Steelers, who averaged 122 running yards per game the previous season, to 41 yards on Sunday, they should be a thing of the past.
The 49ers’ 20-0 lead in the first half is mostly to blame for it. But Pittsburgh also had limited place to run, just as the previous season when no opposition runner scored 100 yards. For instance, Najee Harris gained 24 yards during the second quarter. On his five previous efforts, he averaged 1.4 yards.
68 offensive and 63 defensive snaps were played by the 49ers. They also controlled the clock, dominating for more than 15 minutes, or more than a quarter, longer than the Steelers, as they did for the most of the previous campaign.
According to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, cornerback Ambry Thomas was examined and found not to have had a concussion, therefore there were no injuries to report from the game.
The snap counts are as follows:
Is there a new weakness in the Seahawks defence?
Following their 30-13 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks are worried about if their defensive performance indicates that they are playing on the same route as previous seasons.
Seattle’s defence has had a deadly fault every season for the past few years. Seattle had to make a midseason deal for safety Quandre Diggs in 2019 due to the passing defense’s severe shortcomings. 2020: The pass rush was so bad that defensive end Carlos Dunlap had to be traded in the middle of the season. It required almost a month in 2021.
Carlos Dunlap, a defensive end, was traded in midseason. Before the pass defence improved in 2021, it took almost a month and a few personnel changes, including the addition of Ryan Neal, the removal of Tre Flowers, and the promotion of Tre Brown. After that season, secondary coach Andre Curtis and defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. were still sacked. The run defence from the previous season was among the worst in the league. The defensive line was completely redesigned in the summer, although no significant midseason personnel changes were made.
Practically speaking, there’s always a major issue with Seattle’s defence these days. Participants come and go in a shuffle. The plan changes. We employ and fire coaches. However, something is nearly always present.

GO AHEAD
Despite losing to the Broncos, Raiders prove their mettle.
The Las Vegas Raiders let games like this one get away much too frequently the previous season.
Receptionist Davante Adams stated, “We were just talking about that.” “Last year, this kind of game made all the difference in our season.”
Despite never leading by more than six points, the Raiders’ 17-16 victory over the Broncos on Sunday demonstrated their legitimacy, even if they were unable to seize the initiative. That was mostly because the Broncos were able to linger around because of a long list of preventable mistakes. It seemed like a remarkably similar set of events after the Raiders had lost nine games by one score or fewer the previous season.
For 97 yards, the Raiders had 10 penalties. The six defence and special teams penalties resulted in first downs for the Broncos. They committed just 10 points on their first three possessions inside the Denver 20 because of the four offensive penalties, three of which occurred in the red zone.
Runner Josh Jacobs remarked, “We were fighting through adversity the whole time.” “We were stating that even though we were playing poorly, we were still in the game. We were simply attempting to drive home that, saying to ourselves, “Man, just finish it.”
In the end, the Raiders took advantage of the opportunity and showed a level of poise and fortitude that was lacking in coach Josh McDaniels’ first season. They did not let the lost opportunities get to them.

Following their Week 1 victory, the Philadelphia Eagles’ locker room played “Return of the Mack” over the speakers, bringing a celebratory vibe to meet the gathered media. That was also pretty much how the season started off, with a long field goal on the first play of the game, a pick-six by Darius Slay, a forced fumble on the following New England Patriots play from the line, and a score by DeVonta Smith four plays later. The club that dominated the regular season in 2022 and came agonisingly close to a Super Bowl win appeared very much back to control the game after taking a 16-0 lead in the first quarter.
But the season-opening party on the field was soon muffled, taking just about two minutes for an Eagles staffer to turn down the level significantly on the speakers. This is not the Eagles of last year, as demonstrated by the final three quarters of Sunday’s 25-20 victory.
Giants offensive line embarrassed in 40-0 loss to Cowboys
Andrew Thomas was one of the last Giants left in the locker room as an abysmal Sunday night nearly ticked into Monday morning.
The Giants’ highly paid left tackle, along with his fellow offensive linemen and anyone else who spoke this night, were tasked with trying to explain what had just happened. No easy task after the Giants were shut out by the Cowboys, 40-0, in the franchise’s worst loss in 50 years.
“It’s embarrassing to lose like that at home,” Thomas said.
