Sheffield Wednesday player ratings against Luton Town as Owls lose final pre-season friendly
Was he at fault for the Luton equaliser? He was beaten from a fair distance with a curling effort and replays suggest he might have done better with Mpanzu’s shot.
Started in the right-back position and got forward early doors and won the penalty that gave Wednesday the lead. He was solid enough here but it’s clear he isn’t the answer long-term in this particular area of the park.
On the whole a solid outing but he blotted his copybook slightly late on with his misplaced pass that led to Luton’s second goal.
A composed and calm figure at the heart of the rearguard, he kept the team organised especially when defending set-pieces.
Akin Famewo 7
Started at left-back and didn’t let anyone down. Was positionally savvy. Did pick up a yellow card first half for a rash challenge on his opposite number though.
Will Vaulks 6
Playing at the base of midfield he was keen to collect the ball whenever he could. Kept things ticking over and as ever, the most vocal Wednesday player on the park.
Barry Bannan 6
Made more impact than he had done in the previous few games as he continues to get used to the new demands of Xisco Munoz and the way he wants to play.
George Byers 6
Got another valuable hour under his belt. Made some darting runs but couldn’t really influence the game as much as he would have wanted.
Juan Delgado 7
Extremely bright offering on his first appearance, lasting 45 minutes. Showed some cute touches as he acclimatises to the English game.
Michael Smith 6
Despatched the penalty nicely to keep up his solid record from 12 yards. Also played in some clever balls to tee up teammates.
Josh Windass 5
A quiet game first half although he did pick out Smith with some clever skill second half before being subbed off on 70 minutes.
Substitutes:
Marvin Johnson (For Delgado, 46) 7
Operated on the right of midfield when he came on at the break and really caught the eye with some cross-field balls and a willingness to attack and cut inside.
Tyreeq Bakinson (For Byers, 62) 5
Came on and got up to speed with the game but couldn’t influence it in Wednesday’s favour.
Mallik Wilks (For Windass, 70) N/A
Good to see him back in the fold as he made his first outing of any kind since early April.
Ashley Fletcher (For Smith, 70) N/A
A debut for the Watford loanee, afforded 20 minutes at the end of this warm-up game.
