Ex-Huddersfield Town loanee makes ‘strange’ admission after Derby County switch

Waghorn, who spent the second half of last season loan at the John Smith’s Stadium, appearing 13 times for the Terriers in their successful relegation fight, played for the Rams from 2018/2021. Reflecting on his Pride Park return, Waghorn told BBC Radio Derby. “There was a lot of things happening behind the scenes in terms of other clubs.

“But as soon as I knew of the interest and that the club were happy to progress things and have that conversation, there was only one real thought on my mind, and that was coming back home and getting this club to where it needs to be.”

Waghorn featured for Derby in their Carabao Cup tie at home to Blackpool last night. “It’s been a strange couple of weeks being in and around the place but I’m over the moon to get it (the deal) over the line and I’m ready to get going now,” he said.

The vision of the club and where we need to be and where we all want to be. Obviously I’ve got great history with the place but the chance of being successful here appeals.

“I wasn’t quite getting the game time I needed (at Coventry), in and out with different situations, different reasons, injuries, form. It (the loan to Huddersfield) was all part of me trying to get back out there and test myself.

“It was a difficult couple of years, but it made me learn a lot about myself. I really had to dig deep at times to see what the issues were, what was going on, and in difficult moments that’s when you learn a lot about yourself.
