Championship Club Table Offer For Bolton Wanderers Star

Bristol City have tabled an offer for Bolton Wanderers midfielder George Thomason, which is believed to be in the region of £1 million. Should the League One club accept the bid, it would make the 22-year-old the most expensive sale by the club since Gary Madine, who left the club in January 2018 for Cardiff City in a transfer worth £6.8 million.

The Robins are now on the hunt for a new midfielder after the Alex Scott transfer saga finally came to an end this week. The 19-year-old joined Premier League side Bournemouth for a reported £25 million, leaving the club with a void to fill but possessing the money to do just that. Scott had a few potential suitors in the Premier League, with West Ham, Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers all linked with moves for the English midfielder.

Thomason was one of the players mentioned by Darren Witcoop, as the club identified replacements for Scott, with Oxford United’s Cameron Brannagan the other name mentioned in Witcoop’s report. And now it seems the club have decided who they want to bring into the squad at Ashton Gate.

The 22-year-old midfielder has been at Bolton since January 2020, joining from Longridge on a free transfer and has gone on to make 73 appearances for the club since then, scoring twice and registering three assists. 25 of those appearances came last season for Thomason, registering two assists in that run in the team. The midfielder was on the bench for the club’s opening-day victory over Lincoln City.

Bristol City face a tall ask of replacing a talent like Alex Scott, but they now possess the funds to do so. £25 million is a lot of money for a team in the Championship, but with Scott’s potential, it is obvious why that sort of money was paid. For the Robins, the last thing they want to do is panic when replacing a key player. They have plenty of time to do so in this transfer window, so they have time to assess their options as well as ensuring they are not held hostage in negotiating prices for players.

Bristol City have submitted a bid worth around £1million for Bolton Wanderers midfielder George Thomason, Bristol Live understands, in the wake of Alex Scott’s departure from Ashton Gate.

As reported by Bristol Live on Thursday, Thomason has emerged as a target as Nigel Pearson looks to reinforce that area of the field following the £25m sale of the 19-year-old to Bournemouth on Thursday.

The 22-year-old is not a playmaker or attacking midfielder in the same mould of the England Under-20 international, as Jason Knight looks set to assume that role for the majority of the season, but is a neat, technical player who provides added depth and versatility.

The club has a valuation on every player and provided clubs meet that valuation we will allow players to leave, provided that is what they want to do,” Evatt told Bolton News.

Thomason has made 73 appearances for Bolton since signing from non-league Longridge Town three years ago. Originally a left-back when in the Blackpool academy he was successfully converted into central midfield in his mid-teens and has flourished in the position.

A knee injury disrupted his 2022/23 season, limiting him to just 14 starts, but he returned towards the end of the campaign and made a substitute appearance in the League One play-off semi-final against Barnsley.
