Unai Emery comments on Clement Lenglet as Aston Villa prepare to confirm transfer
Unai Emery has confirmed that Clement Lenglet will become Aston Villa’s latest summer addition.
Lenglet will be the club’s fifth signing following the arrivals of Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby and Nicolo Zaniolo.
He will add much-needed depth to Emery’s defensive options after Tyrone Mings suffered a serious knee injury at the opening weekend of the season earlier this month.
The 28-year-old was signed by Monchi from Sevilla in 2017 in a €5m deal from French club Nancy, before Barcelona paid him a €35m release clause just 18 months later.
He will now be revealed as a fixed-term deal for Villa following his loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur last season.
“It’s not fully signed yet, but he’s about to sign us and join us,” Emery said.
“He’s a player who can help us and after the injury we had with Tyrone Mings, he can replace him in the team.
“
Lenglet made 27 appearances for Tottenham last season and also made seven Champions League appearances.
The defender has European experience with 50 Champions League appearances during his career.
He may not be Villa’s latest addition to Emery’s squad on the final day, as the club are looking to replace the departed Philippe Coutinho.
The Brazilian is set to join Qatari side Al Duhail just a year after joining Villa on a permanent contract in an £18m deal from Barcelona

Aston Villa have just a few hours left to complete the summer transfer business when the summer transfer market closes at 11pm tonight.
Unai Emery has signed four players so far this summer, with Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby and Nicolo Zaniolo all joining them.
During that time, the club raised around £35.
5m from player sales and that figure is set to grow by now.
Villa cashing in on player sales this summer is crucial as Unai Emery is keen to add proven quality to his team and that comes at a cost.
The arrivals of Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby have not reached bankruptcy, but staying on the right wing of FFP Villa needs to balance the books.
It is important that Villa have retained some control over the futures of a number of young players who have been sold to other clubs this summer.
Archer and Ramsey could both return to Villa Park in the coming years for an agreed fee
Hull City are close to signing Jaden Philogene, and the delay is due to negotiations between Villa and the Championship club over the details of a buy-out clause.
If Villa can sell the 21-year-old on favorable terms, as they did with Archer and Ramsey, that would be a great deal.
Despite impressing in pre-season this summer, Emery cannot promise Philogene a regular Premier League appearance and he must be playing at this stage of his career.
Another player Villa is expected to sell today is Keinan Davis.
The striker joined Udinese on a permanent transfer, which would end his eight years with Villa.
He will earn up to £3m, which is a bargain for the club as he has entered the final year of his contract and his last Premier League appearance is in October 2021.
On the arrivals side, Clément Lenglet will be making his debut as the fifth player of the summer for the club.
He will be on loan from Barcelona for the rest of the season and will add much-needed depth to Emery’s defensive options due to Tyrone Mings’ long-term injury.
