Looking back, Birmingham City should never have let these three former players leave the training center
Besides that, the club resolved ownership issues with the arrival of Tom Wagner and Tom Brady.
As we are in this international break, Birmingham sit in the play-offs after five league matches, still unbeaten in the table.
This was achieved after an eventful summer transfer window, in which the club signed a number of new players while also seeing players leave.
One of them was Jobe Bellingham, who graduated from their academy, and that got us at FLW thinking about the academy players, in hindsight that the club should never have gone. That said, here we’ve picked out three former academy players the club sold who, in retrospect, probably shouldn’t have done so…
Butland has been involved in football for a very long time and it’s easy to forget that it all started for him at Birmingham City.
He is another player who played in the youth teams and made it to the first team at a young age.
Butland eventually became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, and he played 46 times for the club, keeping 10 clean sheets.
His form for the club attracted the attention of sides higher up the leagues and in 2013, Stoke came calling and bought Butland for a then nominal fee. Since leaving the club, Butland has established himself as a very good goalkeeper, playing a number of Premier League games and being called up to the England squad.
But this could be one of those situations where the club wants to keep him a little longer, while the player wants to play more times for the club.
As mentioned, Jobe Bellingham is a player who came through the Birmingham City academy but left the club this summer.
Jobe is the older brother of former Birmingham and current Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham. The 17-year-old followed in his older brother’s footsteps by rising through the academy ranks and breaking into the first team. In September last year, Jobe Bellingham had a real breakthrough in the team, despite appearances in the FA Cup and Championship.
Bellingham played 23 times for the Blues last season but it looks like he will have to leave as Sunderland want his services.
The Black Cats have completed a deal with the midfielder and looking back, this is probably something Birmingham wish they had done more to keep the midfielder at their club.
Many people may have forgotten that Redmond played for Birmingham, but he not only played but also studied at the club’s academy.
He came through various levels of the club’s youth team before playing for Birmingham’s first team, but in 2013 he left the Blues to sign for Norwich City. Redmond played 82 times for the club, scoring 9 goals and registering 11 assists. He was part of the team that won the League Cup and then played in the Europa League the following season.
Redmond is highly regarded at the club and is important, as his flair for play makes him a constant threat going forward.
In 2013, the club received an offer they could not refuse for the winger, as the club was in a bad financial situation. But looking back, perhaps he was the player they wished they could have stuck with a little longer.
