An additional point guard would give New Zealand a great opportunity to compete:
Former New Zealand coach challenges India in the 2023 World
Cup
Former New Zealand and Wellington Firebirds coach Glenn Pocknall was delighted with the Kiwis’ performance against England in their 2023 World Cup opener in Ahmedabad on Thursday (October 5). The defending champion received absolute hammer blows from Devon Conway (152*) and Rachin Ravindra. (123*) as the Kiwis claimed a nine-wicket win. However, they had some injury problems with Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee unable to take part in the match.
The Kiwis face India at Dharamsala on October 22 and this is the venue where the fast bowlers have found some goods. Pocknall hopes Ferguson and Southee recover soon as he believes they give New Zealand the balance they need in their bowling.
Speaking exclusively to Sportskeeda, here is what Glenn Pocknall had to say about the match against India:
They (New Zealand) need an extra bowler and maybe a seamer to rebalance the balance of the side. It could be Fergusson or Southee and that would give them a great chance to compete with a strong Indian team. ”
Pocknall also feels there could be an argument for a larger squad for a tournament as important as the World Cup. New Zealand only had 12 players to choose from in the first match, with Kane Williamson also absent. To this, he added: “That makes sense, New Zealand’s balance doesn’t look very good even though they won easily. In a long tournament, extending that would be appropriate physical.”
Despite lacking bowling resources, stand-in captain Tom Latham rotated his bowlers well and made some excellent bowling changes, especially the use of Glenn Phillips, who picked up the big knocks of Joe Root and Moeen Ali. Glenn Pocknall was delighted to see Latham directing so well and said:
“Latham is a very experienced cricketer and like Kane, he brings an atmosphere of calm and consistency. This leadership has allowed the players to be themselves and perform at a high level against the so-called better teams.”
Glenn Pocknall predicts New Zealand’s chances of winning the World Cup
The Kiwis have reached the finals of the last two ODI World Cups, and painfully missed out on the title four years ago. However, Glenn Pocknall believes they can make a deep run back into the tournament if they can put together consistent performances.
On this subject, he stated:
“Consistency is key for New Zealand to get through the playoffs. Play good cricket as a batting, bowling and fielding unit and improve in those big events, which they always do at these events. It’s difficult to measure character and resilience, but those are two areas where this New Zealand team has excelled in the past and they will need to do so again.”
There’s just something about New Zealand and the ICC event where they seem to almost take their game to the next level in these tournaments. They have once again started well and look like the team to beat.
