Why Molloy had to quit Collingwood: “There had to be change”
Chloe Molloy, an AFLW player, feels uneasy at the Swans.
It’s how she knows she made the correct decision in leaving Collingwood.
The Magpies’ most devoted supporter, who jumped the nest last season, signed a five-year contract with Sydney, making it the longest contract in the competition’s history and possibly the largest off-season transaction ever.
During the priority sign and trade period, which permitted the four newest teams to join the competition—Sydney, Essendon, Hawthorn, and Port Adelaide—the Swans signed the 24-year-old club best-and-fairest, two-time All Australian, and Rising Star winner. With special authorization, the Swans signed Molloy for a two-year contract that was longer than any other side could have offered.
There isn’t even the slightest trace of animosity or ill will between Molloy and her former side.
“When I think back on who I was at Collingwood, I was content. I was having a great time playing football with some of my closest friends and representing the team I’ve always loved,” the woman remarked.
However, I believe that change was necessary for both Collingwood and my own development.
She was a regular player at the Magpies, comfortable in her routine and eager to try new things. She was given the chance by the Swans to influence the new team’s culture and elevate younger players.
It has undoubtedly made me uneasy, but in a really positive way for me personally. Because I have to, I’ve added additional facets to my leadership,” Molloy remarked.
It’s been among the most enjoyable trials thus far. I have just spent a few months there. Therefore, I find it hard to believe anything more will occur in the upcoming years. I have never once considered that I shouldn’t have been there or that I should have moved differently.
This weekend, Molloy will play her old rival at Henson Park in a crucial match that the Swans are also utilizing as a home Pride round.
The debut match between the well-known goalkicker and Collingwood was always going to be a major plot point.
There’s even more at stake when you consider that both teams are vying for a finals position with two games remaining—the Swans being a surprising bright spot after finishing the previous season winless.
Even though I’m mentioning the finals after last season, the team wasn’t able to deliver a win, so [this] is a] vital game for us if we want to make the finals, Molloy stated. It will therefore be enjoyable to play Collingwood.
Molloy helped change the course of the Swans’ success in her maiden game in the red and white by leading the team to a historic first AFLW victory against Greater Western Sydney in the derby. After finishing the season winless, the Swans are currently 4-4 and in the running for a top-eight position.
Molloy has been a major factor in the Swans’ rapid ascent. She has nine goals in eight games, and last Saturday, in her team’s 57-point rout of the Western Bulldogs, she broke the record for score involvements in an AFLW game with 17. She also added three goals, 11 marks, and 28 touches.She’s been the target of opposing players more than ever this year because of her season and her ability to flip games around. She is ready for greater attention if it is to come her way on Sunday.
“I believe I’ve received more attention in the last six rounds than I have throughout my entire career. Look, it’s okay if they want to send me a tag,” Molloy remarked.
She is also aware that a lot of ardent AFLW fans, especially those from Sydney and Collingwood, followed this game closely throughout the season’s beginning.
