A fan commentator responds.

Even though Jack Butland recently signed with the Rangers, new head coach Wayne Rooney still wants him at his old team.

Since Rooney shares the club’s vision and objectives, he might receive support to sign players like Jack Butland during the January transfer window.
Birmingham might benefit in the near term from signing Butland, but for long-term security, the team should preferably search for a younger goalkeeper. The ‘Terrace Talk’ series from Football League World features the perspectives of our FLW Fan Pundits on a variety of topics, including teams, players, managers, potential signings, and breaking news.

In the past week, Birmingham City’s relatively new owners demonstrated their seriousness by firing head coach John Eustace and replacing him with England legend Wayne Rooney.

Eustace was replaced by Rooney, who had just left MLS team D.C. United, even though the Blues were sixth in the Championship table. Rooney was more in line with the club’s vision and aspirations.

Furthermore, it’s quite possible that Tom Wagner and company will support Rooney during the upcoming January transfer window, with Jack Butland—another former Blues player—being specifically targeted.

Despite the fact that Butland only recently signed a long-term contract with Rangers during the most recent transfer window, The Sun reported this past weekend that Rooney wants him.

The goalkeeper, who was born in Bristol, began his professional career with City, where he played 46 games and earned an England cap while on loan at St. Andrew’s. However, in January 2013, at the age of just 19, he signed a £3.3 million contract to join Stoke City.

Butland was one of Mick Beale’s new additions in his major rebuild at Ibrox, and he only joined for the Gers in the summer of 2023.

With both Robby McCrorie and Jon McLaughlin in reserve, the 30-year-old has been a constant for Glasgow’s blue half thus far in the 2023–24 campaign, playing 16 games and maintaining seven clean sheets.

In the long run, though, the team should preferably choose for someone younger than the 30-year-old.

Mike told Football League World, “To be honest, I’d be very happy with the signing.”

Joe Hart, Ben Foster, Maik Taylor, and Ian Bennett were just a few of the excellent goalkeepers he succeeded at Blues. He was outstanding and perhaps one of the best ‘keepers we’ve ever had.

“We lost him at a period when we weren’t doing well financially, so I believe we were upset to lose him. He went a little bit on the cheap.

“I don’t think he’s reached his full potential; as a young player without much first-team experience, he was clearly regarded highly when he was making those England selections.

However, I don’t believe he has ever truly been able to soar to the heights we all believed he would.

“I think it would be fantastic if we were to sign him, and I believe that goalkeeping is a position we’ll need to bolster at some point. While John Ruddy recently signed a new deal, he’s
