WHAT A BAD NEWS FOR PRESTON NORTH AND….

A former defender for Middlesbrough, Celtic, and Preston North End was forced to retire at the age of 29 due to an injury.

Due to injuries, Darnell Fisher, a former Middlesbrough defender, had to retire at the age of just 29.
After a season marred by injuries at the Riverside, Fisher was let go by Middlesbrough at the end of the previous campaign.

The player, who had previously played for Preston North End, Rotherham United, and Celtic, moved to Boro in January 2021 for an undisclosed fee from Deepdale, where he had played for four years and made well over 100 appearances.

Fisher signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at the Riverside after winning back-to-back Scottish league titles with Celtic. Former manager Neil Warnock called Fisher “an athletic type who’s desperate to come and do well with us.”

The 29-year-old made his debut for Boro in the goalless draw with eventual winners Norwich City – one of 12 appearances to close off the 2020-21 campaign where the Teessiders would finish 10th in the Championship standings.

Fisher, however, would have to wait more than two years for his next and last football game appearance for Boro. In the summer of 2021, he sustained a serious knee injury while substituting for Michael Carrick in a late game that ended in a 1-1 draw between Boro and Coventry City during the last regular season.

“I was very excited to have Darnell back on the field and involved.” After Fisher’s May cameo, Carrick remarked, “He’s worked so hard.”

“He’s trained and worked so hard, and he’s had an incredibly difficult run with a long, long period out. Credit to him; despite his several disappointments, he has persevered and earned it.

Fisher decided to give up football after his contract with Boro expired in the summer, despite reports that teams lower in the Football League were interested in signing the defender.

Fisher used social media to announce his decision, writing: “I’ve tried everything to get back to full fitness, but it just wasn’t meant to be. The time has come to hang up my boots.” Fisher had suffered a knee injury.

“I am grateful to all of my teammates, clubs, and supporters.”
