The Browns Receive Unfavorable Injury News
Due to knee injuries, Isaiah Thomas and Alex Wright will be sidelined for an extended length of time, according to Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski.Isaiah Thomas and Alex Wright, two second-year defensive ends for the Cleveland Browns, are listed as injured. Head coach Kevin Stefanski provided an update on this information on Monday at his scheduled media appearance. Both sustained injuries during the team’s 21-16 preseason triumph over the New York Jets on Thursday night. The Browns were waiting for additional information regarding Wright and Thomas’ injuries today, as they were not able to practice yesterday. Prior to practice on Sunday, the team also worked out two defensive end players, Jonathan Garvin and Charles Wiley, in Berea. Monday morning, when the Browns officially announced Wiley’s signing, it
Stefanski stated that both players’ injuries are serious and will keep them out of the game for a considerable amount of time, but he did not provide any further information on the severity of their injuries. It is feared that both players will most likely miss the start of the season and maybe a good number of games because the season opener is just over a month away. Although he could not provide a timeline did state that he expected both players to return at some point.
Myles Garrett, Za’Darius Smith, and Ogbo Okoronkwo remain the Browns’ top three defensive ends on the depth chart, but there won’t be as much depth below them as there once was. Wright was almost a given to make the squad and was expected to play a big role in the edge rotation as well as occasionally inside in specific pass rush configurations.
By all accounts, Wright had a successful offseason, and the team was ready for him to advance to the starting lineup in his sophomore campaign. In the action he saw in the Jets preseason opener, especially when he set the edge against the run, he looked good.
Given the amount of money invested in the position, Thomas was predicted to struggle to reach the final 53-man roster just on the basis of numbers. Thomas, a seventh-round pick the previous year, likely performed better since he earned snaps and recorded 1.5 sacks. Though such answers will have to wait for the time being, everyone in the organization is eager to see what type of progress both of these young players could make under the guidance of new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
