‘Exceptional’ – Local media hails Ipswich Town ace after coming in for first-team mainstay

Ipswich Town had drawn consecutive Championship games going into the clash with Swansea City on Saturday afternoon. There was one notable change to the starting XI too, with Massimo Luongo dropping to the bench.

The Australian has formed a formidable partnership with Sam Morsy in the middle of the park but for the Swans test, Jack Taylor came into the side. It didn’t take long for him to make an impact either, levelling the scores with a long-range screamer 17 minutes in after Jay Fulton put the visitors ahead 10 minutes prior.

Egypt's Sam Morsy confirmed Ipswich Town captain

A goal from Conor Chaplin followed, putting Ipswich Town ahead. George Hirst’s penalty – which midfielder Taylor earned – made it 3-1. Swansea pulled one back late on through Jamal Lowe but ultimately, Town emerged 3-2 victors.

Plenty of players drew high praise for their displays, and goalscorer Taylor was among them. He played a central role in the win and his efforts were recognised with a 9/10 match rating from the EADT, who also handed him the man of the match award.

Ipswich Town have thrived on their return to the second-tier and Taylor has proven himself as a player more than capable of thriving at this level too. He caught the eye in his previous Championship stint with Peterborough United but his Swansea City performance truly announced him to the Portman Road faithful.

It was just his second league start for the Tractor Boys. He caught the eye in EFL Cup performances but after coming in for someone as important as Luongo, Taylor has shown just how valuable he could be for Kieran McKenna’s side.

His well-rounded game and eye for a goal from distance has quickly endeared him to supporters and he’ll be keen to kick on again once the international break is done.

The Sky Blues have gone from being a bottom-half side to a play-off contender in the last few seasons, and the aim would have been to continue that this season.

However, that so far hasn’t worked out, as they sit just above the relegation zone, winning just three of their 16 league games.

They will hope this international break has come at the right time for them, as they can regroup and improve in certain areas of their game.

While things are bad for Coventry, they will also be looking at Ipswich Town with envy as they see Conor Chaplin continue to perform at a very high level for the Tractor Boys after what was a poor time at Coventry.

Chaplin came through the academy at Portsmouth, and after spending a few years with their first team, he joined Coventry on a loan deal from the summer of 2018 to January 2019.

The loan was ended, as the Sky Blues decided to by the attacker on a permanent basis.

However, it wasn’t a deal that worked out for either party, as the player stayed until the end of that season, when he then left to join Barnsley.

In the one season he was at the club, he played 32 times for Coventry in all competitions, scoring eight goals and recording three assists in the process.

But for whatever reason, he didn’t work out for the 26-year-old, and he left and has since made an instant improvement in his career at Barnsley and, of course, at Ipswich.

Chaplin, who can play anywhere across the front line, took his game to the next level during his time at Oakwell, but it is at Portman Road where he has really excelled.

The 26-year-old joined the Tractor Boys in the summer of 2021, and in his first season, he scored nine goals and recorded three assists.

Those stats were easily beaten last season, as he grabbed a total of 26 goals and registered five assists, as he played a big part in Ipswich returning to the second tier. Despite the step-up in the leagues, Chaplin has continued once again, with him so far scoring six goals and having four assists to his name.

Chaplin is averaging 4.3 shots per game, 0.4 dribbles, and 1.1 key passes from his 72.3% pass accuracy, as per WhoScored.com. These are stats that will make any Championship team jealous, but they must make Coventry particularly envious, as they had the same player, but he was unable to produce these types of numbers.

The player never looked at home at Coventry, so at the time, it probably was the right decision for them to go their separate ways. But looking now, the Sky Blues will probably have wished they were a little more patient with the attacker, as they could do with that type of player in their team.

Since Viktor Gyokeres left the club in the summer, Coventry has struggled to replace his goals, with Ellis Simms and Haji Wright struggling at this moment in time.

That is partly the reason for Coventry not winning enough games, as they haven’t scored enough goals. So, with Chaplin performing at Ipswich week in and week out, it will be rubbing more salt in the wounds for Coventry, as an old player is coming back to haunt them very much.
