LUKE BRENNAN COMPLETES A TERM LOAN SWITCH FROM WIGAN ATHLETIC

SECRET SCOUT: Winger Luke Brennan should thrive out on loan after extending Blackburn contract| All Football

The 21-year-old, who recently signed a one-year contract extension with Latics, joins Saints on transfer deadline day to bolster their options in attack as they continue to challenge for titles on four fronts.

After joining the Latics from Championship side Blackburn Rovers, Brennan starred for Wigan’s U21s last season and contributed to 20 goals over the course of the campaign.

Helped the Latics to third place and the Central League Cup Final, Brennan trained heavily with the first team this summer, scoring a wonder goal for Shaun Maloney’s men in their final pre-season friendly against Morecambe.

The 21-year-old featured in the Latics’ Carabao Cup clash against Wrexham last month, and will now return to the region to link up with the JD Cymru Premier and gain valuable senior experience.

Speaking earlier, head coach Craig Harrison described Luke as an “exciting young player with a lot of attacking ability.”

“He can play in a number of positions across the front line which will add to our firepower, and he’ll hopefully add lots of assists and goals,” he added.

The New Saints would like to welcome Luke to Park Hall and thank Wigan Athletic for their assistance with the transfer.

But the manager hopes Lang’s first goal in a year and six months in midweek – the third of Latics’ magnificent seven against Leicester City Under-21s – eases some of the pressure the player places on himself.

“I know Callum is very aware of the goal situation, and I’ve been trying to take the blame off him.

“His performances have been…we went away to Derby, and he was probably one of the main reasons we won that game.

“It was the same at Bolton, so he’s had some fine performances along the way.

“Just because he’s not been scoring…I don’t judge his performances by the amount of goals he’s scoring.

“I don’t think he fully realises this yet…but I am the manager, and normally when I say something, I hope the players believe it!

“Look, Callum’s a really, really good player…he just needs to take away that burden of scoring.

“If he really understands his role in the middle of the pitch, then he has the talent to be a big player for us.

“For me, there’s no pressure on him, or any more pressure than on any other player, by his goals.

“Performances on the pitch are where I’ll always judge a player.

“His have been really good…but you could really tell he loved scoring his goal, and I’m glad he did.”
