Ryan Day Provides Updates On Devin Brown’s Injuries for the Ohio State Buckeyes Backup QB
It’s unlikely that Devin Brown will return to the Buckyes for a few weeks after getting hurt against Penn State.
After suffering an injury in the third quarter of Saturday’s 20-12 victory over No. 7 Penn State, backup quarterback Devin Brown will be sidelined for at least a week or two, according to Ohio State Buckeyes coach Ryan Day during his Monday night appearance on “Buckeye Roundtable” on 97.1 The Fan.
In an attempt to start something, Brown, who hasn’t played much in the offense’s intended role, entered the game on second-and-goal at the Nittany Lions’ 6-yard line. The No. 3 Buckeyes (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) have benefited from Brown’s legs this season, and it appeared like his mobility would be relied upon to punch in the score.
Brown maintained the ball and rushed into the end zone after feigning a handoff to running back Chip Trayanum, but Penn State’s strong run defense was prepared and twisted him up close to the goal line for a down loss. Brown stayed on the ground as the pile was broken up.
It seemed that Brown had hurt his right ankle, so trainers helped him off the field. He was observed hobbling off Ohio Stadium after the game on crutches, his right foot in a walking boot.
Day did not specify which body part was impacted by the play when he stated after the game that Brown damaged “a lower extremity.”
The quarterback room has been affected by Brown’s injury in a number of ways. Devin Brown was able to win the starting quarterback position despite expectations that he would compete for it during spring practice.
For the position of QB2, Ohio State is anticipated to look to senior Oregon State transfer Tristan Gebbia. Day also suggested Lincoln Kienholz, a true freshman, as a backup plan. A practice with the second-team offense is anticipated for both players ahead of Saturday’s game versus Wisconsin.
“Tristan has really got a great understanding of what we’re trying to do, and Lincoln’s growing every day, I think he’s got a bright future,” Day stated. “So if need be, those guys will be ready to go.”
Brown has 197 throwing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception through five games this season.
